Magnetic Labyrinth (2003)

Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA

18"W x 24"L x 30"H

Two back-lit viewing cells containing a ferro-magnetic fluid constrained between closely-spaced pieces of glass are mounted on a small table. Initially looking like a blob of black ink, the fluid morphs into a convoluted pattern of lines when a magnet is held against the under-side of the table. Moving the magnet causes the patterns to change. The intimacy of the small table promotes conversation between two seated users.
