Fog Pool (2007)

Exploratorium, San Francisco, CA

48”diam. x 30”H Ultrasonic humidifier, spinning laser pointer, acrylic, polyethylene tank

A thin sheet of green light illuminates a horizontal cross-section of fog. The horizontal “slice” creates the illusion of a turbulent liquid surface. Yet when you stick your hand into the pool, you are confronted with the surprise that it is dry. Gently blowing into the pool causes complex ripples of turbulence to flow across the surface.

The still images are from an event using this technique that took place at the Exploratorium.
